Historical Context

Author: The Apostle Paul

Date Written: Approximately AD 61, during Paul's first Roman imprisonment

Recipients: The church at Ephesus and possibly other churches in Asia Minor (some early manuscripts lack "in Ephesus" in 1:1, suggesting it may have been a circular letter)

Setting: Ephesus was a major commercial and religious center in Asia Minor, home to the temple of Artemis. Paul had spent three years ministering there (Acts 19-20), establishing a strong church. The letter addresses both Jewish and Gentile believers, emphasizing their unity in Christ.

Purpose: To reveal the mystery of the church as the body of Christ, to encourage believers in their spiritual identity, and to provide practical instruction for living out the faith in daily relationships and spiritual warfare.

Greeting and Doxology

Paul greets the saints and faithful in Christ, then launches into praise for spiritual blessings.

Chosen and Predestined

God chose believers before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless, predestined for adoption as His children.

Sealed with the Holy Spirit

Believers are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of their inheritance.

One in Christ

Gentiles, once separated from Israel and without hope, are now brought near through Christ's blood, making both Jews and Gentiles one.

Believers are no longer foreigners but fellow citizens and members of God's household, built on the foundation of apostles and prophets with Christ as the cornerstone.

Paul's Mission to the Gentiles

Paul describes his calling as a prisoner of Christ to preach to the Gentiles the mystery of Christ.

Grace to Preach the Mystery

Paul was given grace to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ and make plain the mystery hidden for ages.

Prayer for Spiritual Strength

Doxology

Unity and Maturity in the Body

Walk Worthy of Your Calling

Paul urges believers to live worthy of their calling with humility, gentleness, patience, and unity in the Spirit.

(4:1-6)

Gifts for Building Up the Church

Christ gave gifts (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers) to equip the saints for ministry and build up the body.

(4:7-16)

Put Off the Old Self

Believers must no longer live as the Gentiles do in futility but put off the old self corrupted by deceitful desires.

(4:17-24)

Practical Instructions for New Life

Specific commands: speak truth, don't sin in anger, don't steal, use helpful speech, and avoid grieving the Holy Spirit.

Walking in Love and Light

Imitators of God

Believers should imitate God and walk in love as Christ loved us and gave Himself as a sacrifice.

(5:1-2)

Avoid Sexual Immorality

Warning against sexual immorality, impurity, greed, and obscenity—these have no place among God's people.

(5:3-7)

Walk as Children of Light

Believers were once darkness but are now light in the Lord; they must walk as children of light and expose darkness.

(5:8-14)

Wise Living and Spirit-Filled Life

Be careful how you walk, redeem the time, understand God's will, and be filled with the Spirit through worship and thanksgiving.

(5:15-20)

Wives and Husbands

Instructions for marriage: wives submit to husbands as to the Lord; husbands love wives as Christ loved the church.

(5:21-33)

Christian Relationships and Spiritual Warfare

Children and Parents

Children should obey and honor their parents; fathers should not exasperate children but bring them up in the Lord's training.

(6:1-4)

Slaves and Masters

Slaves should obey earthly masters with sincerity as serving Christ; masters should treat slaves well, knowing they have the same Master in heaven.

(6:5-9)

The Armor of God

Be strong in the Lord and put on the full armor of God to stand against the devil's schemes in spiritual warfare.

(6:10-17)

Pray in the Spirit

Pray at all times in the Spirit with all kinds of prayers for all the saints and for Paul's bold proclamation of the gospel.

(6:18-20)

Final Greetings

Paul sends Tychicus to give them news and encouragement, and closes with blessings of peace, love, faith, and grace.

Spiritual Warfare: The Christian life involves spiritual battle against evil powers, requiring believers to put on the full armor of God and pray constantly in the Spirit.
