The Edomites were descendants of Esau, Jacob's twin brother (Genesis 25-36). Despite this close familial relationship, there was persistent hostility between Israel and Edom throughout history.
Edom's Geography: Edom occupied the mountainous region south of the Dead Sea, with their capital Sela (later Petra) carved into rock cliffs, making them feel secure and unconquerable.
The Immediate Occasion: When Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC, the Edomites not only failed to help their Israelite brothers but actively participated in looting and capturing fleeing refugees. This treachery is also mentioned in Psalm 137:7 and Lamentations 4:21-22.
Fulfillment: Edom was conquered by the Nabateans in the 6th-4th centuries BC and eventually ceased to exist as a nation. The Edomites (Idumeans) were later absorbed into Judaism and disappeared from history, while Israel survived.
Obadiah, whose name means "servant of Yahweh", is best known as the author of the shortest book in the Old Testament. Little is known of his personal life, and his exact identity remains uncertain, as several men in the Old Testament bore the same name.
His prophecy, likely delivered in the 6th century BC following the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem (586 BC), focuses on God's judgment against Edom for its violence and betrayal toward Judah — an enduring theme of divine justice and covenant faithfulness.
Some Jewish traditions identify him as the Edomite servant of King Ahab who hid a hundred prophets from Jezebel's wrath (1 Kings 18:3-4) and later converted to Yahweh, which, if true, would make his condemnation of Edom particularly poignant. Though brief, Obadiah's message powerfully affirms God's sovereignty over nations and foretells the ultimate triumph of His kingdom over all earthly powers.
