Time Period:
Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah (640-609 BC), likely in the early part of his reign before the reforms of 621 BC. This places him as a contemporary of Jeremiah and Nahum.
Political Setting:
Judah had endured the wicked reigns of Manasseh and Amon. Young King Josiah was beginning his reign, but the nation was still steeped in idolatry and syncretism. The Assyrian Empire was weakening, and Babylon was rising.
Author Background:
Zephaniah's genealogy is traced back four generations to Hezekiah, likely the righteous king. This makes him of royal blood and possibly gives him access to address national leadership directly. His name means "the LORD hides" or "the LORD has hidden."
Religious Conditions:
Judah was practicing Baal worship, astral worship, and syncretistic worship of the LORD mixed with pagan practices. Many were spiritually complacent, believing God would do nothing—neither good nor bad.
Influence on Reform:
Zephaniah's preaching likely influenced young King Josiah's reforms. The prophecy may have helped prepare hearts for the revival that came when the Book of the Law was discovered in 621 BC.
Message Purpose:
To warn of impending judgment (the Day of the LORD), call the nation to repentance before it's too late, and promise ultimate restoration for a purified remnant.

Corrupt Leaders Condemned
Officials are roaring lions, rulers are evening wolves, prophets are unprincipled, priests profane the sanctuary and do violence to the law. Yet the LORD is righteous and does no wrong.

Nations Cut Off as Warning
God has cut off nations as an example, yet Jerusalem still showed no fear and accepted no correction. They were even more corrupt in all their actions.

Promise of Final Restoration
God will remove sorrows, gather the exiles, give them honor and praise, rescue the lame, gather the outcast, and restore their fortunes before their eyes.
