REST

When Jesus said "I will give you rest", he meant exactly that. Not "I'll take the problem away", but "I will give you rest". Not "I'll take your burden" but "my burden is light". Not "no yoke", but "my yoke is easy". When everything's perfect, it's easy to be at rest - the real supernaturalness of the rest Jesus promised is that we experience it mostly only in the midst of a storm. The peace he offers does not depend on a delicate equilibrium of improbabilities - it comes when the winds blow and the rains fall, and the house on the rock stands firm.

"Learn from me," he said in the same passage of Scripture, "and you will find rest for your souls". As daunting and intimidating as they were, the last few months have taught me that it's not foolhardy to sleep in the stern of the boat when it's about to sink...when everything is surrendered to and depends on the One who said "I will give you rest", you will have rest. You might get wet, but your spirit will be at rest.
